The Himalayan nation's Political Landscape Sees Major Partnership Formed By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Discussions Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of major political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
