One Piece Concludes a 27-Year Era in the Coming Year

It's the end of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation revealing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of filler arcs. Commencing in the new year, after the current storyline concludes, the anime will go on a three-month hiatus until spring, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

Going forward, One Piece will produce two seasons every annually for a cap of two dozen installments. Toei states this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the universe — including more content, rhythm, and timing of the original manga.” However, producers conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which suggests more related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime had a six-month pause that began in late 2024 and ended in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to improve the visuals and allow the comic to get further ahead to prevent a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this respite, and it has managed to deliver viewers with numerous action sequences, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although a few summary installments sprouted up during this season, the benefits of this updated approach greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the story. This additionally allows the original work, which is currently in the thick of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the announcement, this may lead to a single installment of the anime adapting one chapter, with others instead covering one and a half chapters or more to make up for time.

This concludes of an era for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the final major title to abandon the old-school way of creation, which prioritized airing for almost the entire year. This explains why classics such as Bleach, and of course One Piece have so many side stories, and the quality of the art can vary widely between one episode and the next. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two at most coming out each year, enabling improved visuals and more faithfulness to the source material.
