Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the number of employment gains added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of positions added to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication once the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, which he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are rising, although slowly. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
