Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
